Department Scholarships for Undergraduates

Beck Family Scholarship*
Established by Jim and Denise Beck to help the department recruit the best undergraduate geology students, with particular emphasis on providing assistance for students to attend field camp.

Kevin Connolly Geology Field Camp Scholarship*
Established by Kevin Connolly (B.A. 1987) in 2008 to provide Geology or Earth Science majors with a scholarship to attend the Carl Vondra Field Camp.

Carolyn Jones-Eiler Scholarship*
Established in the memory of Carolyn Eiler-Jones (B.S. 1973) by her family, this fund provides a scholarship for an undergraduate geology student to attend the summer field camp.

Rodney D. Gardner Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1995 by the children of Rodney D. Gardner (B.S. 1962), this fund furnishes a scholarship to an undergraduate geology student on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

Huedepohl Geology Field Camp Scholarship*
Established in 2004 by Bradley Huedepohl (M.S., 1956) to provide a scholarship for an undergraduate geology student to attend the ISU summer field camp.

Peter R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship*
Established in the memory of Peter R. Johnson (B.S. 1977) by his family, this fund provides a scholarship for an undergraduate geology student to attend the summer field camp.

Kozimko Geology Field Camp Scholarship
Established by Mary Ann and Mike Kozimko (MS 1977) in 2018 to support students attending the Carl Vondra Geology Field Camp on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

Michael M. Oetken Memorial Scholarship
Through a generous donation by Diane Van Duzen in honor of her father Michael Oetken, the Meteorology program awards a $1000 scholarship annually to an eligible undergraduate Meteorology major. Recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have junior or senior class standing by the time of the award. Preference is given to students who are residents of southeast Iowa (south of I-80 and east of I-35), however this is not a requirement.

Jon Martin Peckenpaugh Geology Field Camp Scholarship*
Established in 2010 in the memory of Jon M. Peckenpaugh (B.S. 1970; M.S. 1973) by his family, to provide a scholarship for an undergraduate geology, environmental science, or Earth science major or a geology graduate student to attend the Carl Vondra Field Camp.

Graduate Research Fellowships

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

Deadline: Mid-November
Details and Eligibility: The fellowship supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. Eligible students are those who have completed no more than 12 months of full-time graduate study by August 1 in year of application. This includes undergraduate students anticipating graduate work and first-year and second-year graduate students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees.

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowship

Deadline: Late November
Details and Eligibility: The fellowship’s goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool. Eligible students are American citizens who have the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution (includes ISU). The fellowship is available to undergraduate seniors anticipating graduate work, those returning from the workforce, and first or second year graduate students.

Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship

Deadline: Early November
Details and Eligibility: The fellowship is based on merit (not on need) and supports the nations “most remarkable PhD students in the physical, biological, and engineering sciences.” Eligible students are American citizens who are undergraduate seniors or graduate students planning to pursue a PhD.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

Deadline: Mid-December
Details and Eligibility: The fellowship aims to increase the number of US citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance (including geoscience, oceanography, and physics) and is administered by the Department of Defense (DoD). Eligible students include undergraduate seniors and graduate students who have completed less than two full-time years of graduate study.

NOAA – Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program

Deadline: Early December
Details and Eligibility: The fellowship recognizes outstanding scholarship and encourages independent graduate level research – particularly by female and minority students – in oceanography, marine biology, and maritime archaeology. US citizens pursuing master’s or doctoral level degrees, have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and have been admitted to or are currently enrolled in a graduate program are eligible to apply.

American Meteorological Society Graduate Fellow Program

Deadline: Mid-January
Details and Eligibility: The fellowship supports outstanding students looking to pursue graduate education in the atmospheric or related sciences. Eligible students must be entering their first year of graduate study, have a minimum GPA of 3.25, and be a US citizen.

Graduate Research Grants

Geological Society of America Graduate Research Grant

Deadline: Early February
Details and Eligibility: The grant serves to provide partial support of master’s and doctoral thesis research in the geological sciences. Eligible students are members of GSA enrolled in universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, or Central America.

Graduate Women in Science National Fellowship

Deadline: Mid-January
Details and Eligibility: Awards will be made to women holding a degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, of outstanding ability and promise in research, who are performing research at any institution in the U.S. or abroad. Eligible applicants include women graduate students and early-career researchers.
